Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk (or whole milk with 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • ½ lb ground beef
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or Colby Jack)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (optional for topping)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional for topping)
  • ½ tsp dried parsley (optional for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Drain grease, then stir in shredded cheese.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Stir in buttermilk until just combined — do not overmix.
  4. Pour the melted butter into the baking dish. Spread half the dough into the dish.
  5. Evenly spoon the beef and cheese mixture over the dough layer.
  6. Spread the remaining dough over the top of the filling.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through.
  8. Optional: Mix melted butter, garlic powder, and parsley and brush over the top after baking.
  9. Let cool slightly, then slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh shredded cheese for better melting.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or a plant-based meat for a lighter version.
  • To make it gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • For added flavor, try mixing in cooked bacon or jalapeños.
