Description

This easy homemade chili recipe is packed with hearty ground beef, kidney beans, and a rich tomato base, perfect for cozy family dinners or casual parties. It’s quick, simple, and highly customizable to your taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can stewed tomatoes
  • 1½ cups water (optional for thinner consistency)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (plus more to taste)
  • 1 pinch garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add ground beef and chopped onion. Cook and stir until meat is browned and onion is tender, about 5–7 minutes.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, kidney beans, and stewed tomatoes with their juice.
  3. If desired, add 1½ cups water for a thinner texture.
  4. Season the mixture with chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Bring the chili to a gentle boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
  7. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure all flavors combine beautifully.
  8. Serve hot, and garnish with cheese, sour cream, or fresh cilantro if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier chili, add diced jalapeños, chipotle peppers, or a few dashes of hot sauce.
  • If you’re looking for a healthier chili, swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken.
  • Customize with more vegetables, such as bell peppers, zucchini, or corn for extra flavor and color.
